Sometimes the requirements for web projects go beyond “off-the-shelf products”. Then he is called upon: our developer Chris Wagner. In his Expert interview He gives you an insight into his daily work at KAOS and talks about one of his favorite disciplines – the Individual application development.
Chris, could you describe to us in a few words what is behind the term “individual application development”?
The best way to describe this is probably tailor-made software that is specifically tailored to a company or its intended use. Be it in the form of an app, an interface or a complex website that can do more than just present the company. As an example, I would like to mention Facebook or eBay classifieds.
Sounds exciting. Which project requests are predestined for this?
As soon as a customer carries out an activity that is constantly repeated and involves the processing of data, it is quite possible that an inquiry to us is worthwhile. But creative ideas are also generally in good hands with us. We cannot generalize this, but you can basically see it as anything is possible.
Where do you see the greatest added value for our customers?
I see the great added value in optimizing our customers' work processes in order to increase productivity through automation, avoid the error-prone nature of manual processes, and relieve the burden on employees, which in turn leads to a more pleasant working atmosphere. We can tailor individual developments directly to the customer and are not tied to fixed processes of any existing applications.
"It makes me proud to see how projects I have been involved in are being used in companies and how processes that were previously only done manually and with a lot of effort are being automated."
What is the difference between system integration and application development?
In application development, you mainly develop software that automates processes, for example, whereas in system integration you are more concerned with hardware and its setup.
Can you give some well-known examples of individual application development? Companies, software, apps or products that everyone of us knows?
Most people are probably familiar with Facebook and Instagram. These are two great examples of what is possible with individual application development. Another thing that comes to mind is the DHL parcel tracking app.
How extensive does one have to imagine individual development to be?
There is no general answer to this question. It always depends on the project and its requirements.
What do you particularly enjoy about your job?
I particularly enjoy it when both the customer and we are satisfied with the implementation and the systems are then used productively. It makes me proud to see how projects I have worked on are used in companies and how processes that were previously only done manually and with a lot of effort are automated.
Thanks Chris, for the little insight into your work as an application developer.
